On a Knife Edge


Eli Cane is a Peabody Award-winning producer and director. He runs Normal Life Pictures, a production company based in Brooklyn, NY specializing in feature documentary and music films. 

Eli’s PBS film producer credits include: On a Knife Edge, a coming-of-age film about growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation which follows an activist father and son's relationship over 6 years; Land Rush, a film for the Why Poverty? series, about industrial vs. small-scale farming in Africa which won the 2012 Peabody Award for Excellence in Journalism; and The Market Maker for PBS/Wide Angle about the development of the region's first commodities exchange in Ethiopia. On the music side, Eli has produced music and performance videos for many artists, from Solange to Bill Frisell, and institutions such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Billboard, and Sony Masterworks. He partnered with the late, great jazz producer/arranger Bob Belden to executive produce the film and music project Miles Español for eOne Music, which featured Latin Jazz luminaries and veterans of Miles Davis's bands such as Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Ron Carter, and many more. He worked for seven formative years at Nonesuch Records, where he oversaw production of over 150 albums, including a dozen or so Grammy-winners. He regularly produces episodes of the PBS show Live from the Artists Den.
