When I got the invitation to go to Santa Fe from Vision Maker Media to attend the Media For Change Workshop, I thought, “Oh yeah, Santa Fe during Indian Market? Never done that. I’m in.” So along with my girlfriend, Joyce, we arrived that Thursday by plane. The trip was an especially big thrill for Joyce who had never been to New Mexico. I was excited for her as we took the Rail Runner from Albuquerque to Santa Fe because as a photographer I knew she’d have plenty to shoot.

Finally in Post-Production, I can see an end to five years of making my first feature documentary, My Louisiana Love. Now… how will the film help bring forth change for my best friend, co-producer, and main subject, Monique Verdin and her Houma Indian family of southeast Louisiana? With this question hanging over me, I gratefully accepted Vision Maker Media’s invitation to a Media for Change workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

If ever there were a boot camp for emerging filmmakers, the folks at NALIP have laid the groundwork for how things might go: early mornings, late nights, constant networking, and in between, squeezing in sessions of proposal writing, film editing, music composition, crowd-funding and practicing the perfect pitch. After 10-days of non-stop work-shopping at the Latino Producer’s Academy, I felt as though I had pulled the ultimate all-nighter, extremely fatigued, but reflecting on the experience with much satisfaction.

It was wonderful to have the chance to meet folks here. Thanks to everyone for the conversations and experience, and I look forward to keeping up the dialogue! Here are my notes: These suggestions concern how discussion guides and lesson plans might be tailored for use in higher education classrooms.

My head was swimming with ideas as I left the Media for Change Conference. As a college professor and a documentary producer for Wisconsin Public Television, I straddle both an academic world, where I try to grow the next generation of digital storytellers, and a professional sphere, where I coax funders to bankroll worthy projects—most of them dealing with Native topics.

The training was a wonderful opportunity for bringing educators and film & media makers together to learn from each other's worldview on education outreach through film/media. For the morning session, dividing each group up into professional areas was a positive move. As an educator it was good to see the conversations targeting various levels of education (primary, secondary, hirer education,...). It allowed all participants to gain new knowledge of how each level weaves among the other levels, or how each level is distinctively seperate (in some cases).

Last week, I attended Media for Change and it was a great experience. First off, a big thank you to Vision Maker Media for the opportunity to attend. The following is a recap of the first session of the conference.

Several weeks ago I received a call from Vision Maker Media. The name alone was appealing, but then I learned it would be during Indian Market in Santa Fe. Would I want to join them? Hmmm…. Santa Fe during Indian Market, an event displaying fantastic Native ingenuity and creativity in art, film and music; a meeting to talk about how film can be used in education to inspire reflection and action among students. Hard decision…. Not. I wouldn’t miss it.
