Jana Mashonee is Lumbee and Tuscarora. She's been singing since high school and it was her choir teacher who encouraged her to enter singing competitions. She also was the lead singer in a local band and was able to sign a record contract. Later She was told that her singing talent could be turned into a professional career.

Native American performers infuse contemporary genres of dance and music with traditional elements from their Tribal heritage. Through artist interviews and performances, six profiles document the effort to bring this "Native Fusion" genre to mainstream performing arts.

Award-winning singer/songwriter Bill Miller (Mohican) will be performing at the Newmark Theatre in Portland, Oregon, tomorrow, July 16. The concert kicks-off at 7 p.m.

The new documentary, For the Generations: Native Story & Performance, offers viewers a unique look at today’s most progressive Native American music and dance performers. This month’s producer profile features Sean Hutchinson.  He is a co-producer of the film, along with Mary Hager (French-Canadian Cree/Metis) and Arlie Neskahi (Navajo) of Painted Sky, last month’s featured producers.
