Looking Toward Home

George Burdeau is a veteran director and producer, as well as a founding member of Vision Maker Media. He has won both Emmy and Peabody awards for his work and was the first Native American director in the Director’s Guild of America.

Beverly Morris received a B.F.A. from Stephen Austin University. Moving to New Mexico opened the way for a career in media.

Director and producer Dale Kruzic lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A veteran documentary filmmaker, he worked for two PBS-affiliates, KNME and KCTS, for fifteen years.

An increasing number of Native Americans are leaving the Reservation for life in city areas such as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and the San Francisco Bay area. The life of urban Indians is shown primarily through the eyes of these individuals as they attempt to maintain their cultural identity while living away from the Reservation.

George Burdeau doesn’t just make films; he makes films with a purpose. For over 40 years Burdeau has been creating films that portray Native American life from a realistic point of view. These films have improved awareness and knowledge of true Native culture.

Burdeau got his start while studying to be a painter at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was during this time he noticed a disturbing trend in Native American films.

Beverly Morris has dedicated much of her 18 years of broadcasting to developing young media makers as the project director of the Institute of American Indian Arts’ summer television and film workshop in Santa Fe, NM.

During the project’s first three years it has extended opportunities to many young broadcasters they otherwise would never have had.
